If you interrupt the lecturer so that I have to hear one more stupid anecdote about that chinese restaurant you once ate that caused you to shit blood from your ears for two weeks or some such stupid thing, I'm going to give you a parenteral infection with multiple portals of entry. Maybe if we're lucky, some of that staphylococcus aureus on your skin will be of a MERSA genus and endotoxic shock will overtake your body. If we're really lucky, that endotoxic shock will cause expedient hypotension and you'll pass out in your seat -- at least until the end of this unit.

Back to lecture...

"Sorry to go back to this, but this just occurred to me.
Denver and new year's

Denver was amazing. I hauled ass to the airport after work on Wednesday only to find my flight was running an hour and a half late. Overhearing my dismal transportation options into the city, the woman sitting next to me on the plane offered me a ride into downtown Denver. In the end, I arrived an hour before midnight, just long enough for a couple drinks, to change, and then to run and see the fireworks near market square.

Most of us, still near sobreity, decided to check out a nearby bar. Apparently our creative headwear ( wigs for the girls and a Russian fur hat for me) startled the meek bar manager and two cops, and we were refused service before we were even able to begin making asses of ourselves.

We left and headed back toward the apartment and upon arriving decided to check out the dive around the corner. There was cheap beer, red velvet carpeting and a dj spinning bad hip hop from the 90s. It was perfect.

The next day we collected ourselves and headed out to the siblings' timeshare in the Rockies. There was much sledding, hottubbing, board gaming and even some barhopping.

Now I sit in the denver international airport writing an eljay entry on my phone, praying the app doesn't crash and lose all my writing. It's back to work tomorrow, which I'm dreading. Having had so much fun the past few days makes me wish I could stay here. I owe a special thanks to conrad and candace for hosting us and hope to see them at operation new year 2010, Hawaii.

Carrie has been briefed on our required return to Hawaii this year and promised she would begin preparations. Speaking of which, I have a statement of objectives to finish and then the GRE to take in a week for grad school apps. I'll be in ann arbor to supervise some presentations a few times this month and then classes start in two weeks. No rest for the wicked.

An Open Letter

Grandma,

Normally I would send this letter to your home in Toledo, but you died just over six months ago. So I'm not sure exactly where I should send this. Perhaps you read my blog. I sort of doubt it, seeing as compuserve was a challenge for you 10 years ago. But, you never know, so... Here goes.

When I saw you back in January you looked so frail. I felt bad because it had been months since I'd seen you. You were in your normal place in your easy chair in front of the TV, watching national geographic specials. I told you all about my new life in Chicago, my new job in family planning, feeling good about myself though wary about my finances, but blindly optimistic in my assertion that it would all work itself out. My mother was there the day prior, telling you how she'd likely be laid off again this year - the Michigan public school system was suffering from a systematic loss of student population - but you already knew that, and she told you she was confident she'd be hired back again.

Although I know you likely addressed us in different manners, I'd like to think you wove my mother a similar message. "We [our family] have always sought to influence the lives of others, supporting those who have the skill, but need a little education or a stepping stone. As long as you are confident in your ability to assist those who seek out your help, you will be fine."

After another twenty minutes of conversation, you were tired and I carried you to bed. Your son would be back in the morning to help you with breakfast. I didn't see you again for another month, when I received the news on my way to work that you'd suddenly taken ill and were in the hospital. I drove back that afternoon to see you in Toledo. You'd lost weight, were looking more pale, and slightly annoyed with all the attention you were receiving. Despite your weakened condition, you were the one to silence the fussing and bickering amongst our small family. We spent the rest of the afternoon with two guitars, singing in your crowded hospital room. You beamed from ear to ear.

I saw you one last time, though you probably don't remember. I received a call while doing 90 somewhere on the interstate in Indiana, saying you'd died a few minutes prior. You looked so small when I arrived, but finally relaxed. No longer squinting and wincing at new stimulus that appeared at your bedside. None of us realized, standing there silent, nor walking in the park afterward that it would likely be the last moment we shared as a family. You always were our grounding point, with other family relations ranging from tenuous to distant at best. Without you, we are an amalgamated mix of relations and feelings. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be the smallest nucleus of relations, the three of us dreaming of foreign cities and tropical attractions to distract us from our prior ritualized pine nut-hidden-in-the-rice-pudding or rounds of hallelujah and johnny appleseed. Not that we ever had religious traditions. We embraced Christmas as a cultural tradition, only as the jews could. And the rest we proudly made up ourselves, only as unitarians could.

As you may not know, grandma, things have gotten worse over these past 6 months. I find myself struggling more and more to keep my head above water with only my full-time wage at my one job. I've desired another job, but the demand of my one job drains me so much by the end of the day, it's only so much I can do to stay under 50 hours a week and healthy each month. Things don't add up. Someone wants to collect on a new debt at an increasing rate each and every day. I start to feel myself slip.

My mother is having trouble too. We've all hailed unions as the saving grace for the working class in Michigan, but being unionized doesn't help much when you're worried about a pension and an IRA that you've only recently been able to start in your late fifties. Above all this, your co-op is converting to privately owned residences, and you have a short period of time to come up with not only the equity, but the liquifiable assets to pay for the original cost of your first home equity mortgage so you can refinance afterward.

When we heard from the executor of your estate recently that you had a small inheritance after medical bills and all other settlements, we were shocked. You never let on that you had anything left in savings; you always loved to travel as much as your budget allowed.

Now I know why you had a twinkle in your eye that evening in Toledo, sitting in your easy chair, when you told me things would be fine. It will never be enough to let us live comfortably, you wouldn't want complacency. But it's enough to keep us afloat, to allow us to continue doing what we want, and to strive to achieve our goals, not to surrender to our circumstances. With frugality we can smartly proceed and breathe a bit easier.

And I know you couldn't be happier.

See 0:51 and 5:23 for extra luls.

Oh hell, who are we kidding? It's 5 minutes of non-stop comedy that will leave your mouth agape and your being violated.

Couric: I'm just going to ask you one more time; not to belabor the point - specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation.

Palin: I'll try tah findja some and I'll bring 'em tooya.

<lj-embed id="6" />

Enjoy. Also, McCain trying to avoid the debate? I can't say I blame him or the party for trying to delay the presidential debate if it gives them any more time to prep Palin for the veep debates, or allows them to come closer to postponing the veep debates indefinitely.

    <lj:music>Alanis - Duh</lj:music>

The past week at night in my apartment. I brushed it off as the bedsprings. I have a cheap mattress.

Then tonight I caught my Baby staring at the end of the bookcase intently, sniffing. I entertained him and moved the end of the bookcase, and see a tiny brown dot dash out from under the bookcase and through the crack under my front door. I make a mental note to bring up the issue of insulating doorways before paying my next rent check.

Later, after finishing a biology assignment, I notice my Baby once again rapt in the crook between the wall and the bookcase. I once again oblige him, if not humored by his enthusiasm, and move the end of the bookcase. This time our tiny furry friend did not bolt for the door, his best bet for an escape route, but instead dashes into the openness of my studio floor, doubling back into a circuitous route that ensures his doom as Baby snares him not two inches from his return to the bookcase.

My dog has always been jovial, friendly, exuberant, a ne'er-do-harm. But starting tonight, my friends, my dog is a mouser. And a gracious mouser indeed.

so i stumbled into my dog in the dark kitchen on my way to get a glass of water. i cursed and apologized to him then turned on the light to find him look up and give me an inquisitive look. no harm done. i returned to getting a glass of water and he resumed his previously uninterrupted activities of licking at something almost out of sight behind the couch.

now curious, i lean over to discover my dog licking up a large shapeless beige mass. oh great, i think to myself. he's found a dead animal. no, that can't be right. as my eyes focus a bit more, i realize the small lumps in this mass can be no other than bloated pieces of dry dog food, and the beige gelatin suspending which, no doubt a homogeneous mixture of water and the pizza crusts i gave him before i went to bed.

horrified and disgusted, i move to interrupt his grotesque second dinner, but pause as i consider the alternative. in the time it takes me to glance back toward the kitchen sink and the materials with which i might clean it up with, he is happily finishing his last re-helping.

i used to be sad my dog wasn't much for affectionate licking...
